BURAKA SOM SISTEMA – BLACK DIAMOND
A couple of months ago I found myself filling up a Sunday afternoon by flicking through a pile of music magazines from the floor of my bedroom. It was from this pile that I first read about a group of DJs calling themselves Buraka Som Sistema – leaders of a new musical movement called Kuduro. Little did I know that BSS were quietly putting together one of the biggest dance records of 2008. To understand this record, you first have to understand Kuduro. Kuduro is what’s left when you take the tri

OBASANJO MEETS KABILA OVER DRC CRISIS
Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, the United Nations special envoy for eastern Congo, met Congolese President Joseph Kabila tardy on Friday and will fly east for talks with rebel leader Laurent Nkunda. Obasanjo is trying to avert a broader regional war breaking out after battles between Nkunda’s Tutsi guerrillas and the Congolese army forced some 250,000 people from their homes in Democratic Republic of Congo’s North Kivu province. “They met last night,” a source in the DRC presidency

U.N. envoy says Congo crisis talks going well
KINSHASA – Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo said on Saturday his efforts to end fighting in Congo were going fairly well and that President Joseph Kabila had not given conditions for talks with the rebels. Kabila's army is battling dissident Tutsi general Laurent Nkunda's rebels and Obasanjo has been charged by the United Nations with stopping the violence escalating into a re-run of the 1998-2003 conflict that sucked in six African nations. "(I) am trying to draw together the stra

They are moving a lot of airplanes around, and they’re flying to a bunch of cities that you’ve probably never heard of. They’re clearly enjoying having a brand new fleet of Northwest airplanes to schedule, but a lot of these seem like risky moves. Then again, you know what they say. No risk, no return. In case you missed it: The 2008 Fantasy Female Draft
Anyone that has spent 5 minutes watching the NFL/NBA draft realizes how homoerotic commentators can be when they describe the athletic acuity of college prospects. To make it decidedly less gay, the Banned in Hollywood editors have constructed the first ever Female Fantasy Draft. Draft order was predetermined by number of women notched on our belts. Since Peter is still a virgin, he gets first pick. Round 1: Returner (lady you can bring home to the parents.) 1. Natalie Portman, Jerusalem, Irs

Delta Announces World Domination Plans
This is why Delta wanted to hook up with Northwest so bad: The soon-to-be supercarrier announced 15 new routes today, 12 of which aren't served by any US airlines. The focus of the planned expansions? Japan, Africa and Europe. Delta already had direct US-Africa flights on lockdown, but with more planes on hand, it will further expand service there, to cities like Cape Town, Lagos, Luanda and Monrovia. As for Japan, the former Northwest hub at Tokyo-Narita will now be at Delta's disposal, for

Angolan Deputy Foreign Minister Georges Chicoty did not say how many troops will go or what their mission will be. Southern African regional leaders meeting at a summit Sunday had discussed sending troops to reinforce the scattered Congolese army. Delta Expands Further in Africa and Asia with Nonstops to Angola and Equitorial Guinea (Really)
(updated from an earlier incomplete post…) Delta will launch flights to a host of cities in Africa and Asia next year, as they cherry-pick opportunities for cities that will survive during an economic slowdown. Incredibly, they’ll offer one-cease service from Atlanta (through Cape Verde) to Luanda, Angola; Malabo, Equitorial Guinea; and Abuja, Nigeria. Seriously. I know that Malabo and Abuja have lots of oil-related business traffic, so there’s built-in business there (flights are only once

Buraka Som Sistema - Sweaty Tribal House Synth
Buraka Som Sistema - Sweaty Tribal home Synth Posted November 11th, 2008 by TerroREID!! This mix is truly amazing. It makes me feel like music can arrive back around to its inception in the tribes of our ancestors with modern day drummachines and synths filling in as the witch doctors and village elders. I really like the way Pitchfork described this mixtape, “a 20-minute mix of African drum cadences and zippy home synths…. Sweaty and brightly adorned….” Marc Hogan of PitchforkMedia.com CLI
